WHAT YOU'RE SIGNING UP FOR
If you have five days, this is the loop: the ruins of the Mongol Empire's capital, the last truly wild horses on Earth, and a night as a guest in a nomad's ger with milking and cheese-making at dawn.
The terrain is gentle rolling steppe, the distances are short, and the van windows frame a different postcard every hour. It is the best introduction to Mongolia we know — and the only one you can do on a long weekend.
Day by day
THE ROUTE
- 1
Ulaanbaatar → Karakorum
West on the main road, lunch in Erdenesant, and the afternoon among the stupas of Erdene Zuu. Camp within sight of the walls.
- 2
Karakorum → Orkhon Valley
Morning at the monastery museum, then north into the Orkhon Valley UNESCO site. Evening walk to the waterfall.
- 3
Orkhon Valley → ger stay
A gentle day of valleys and passes to a herder family's winter camp, where we help with the evening milking and eat dinner in the ger.

Ger stay → Khustai National Park
Early milking, then east to Khustai to watch takhi herds from the ridge at sunset.
- 5
Khustai → Ulaanbaatar
Morning wildlife walk, lunch on the road, and a mid-afternoon arrival back in UB.
