Altai Eagle Country

Altai Eagle Country is not a sightseeing tour. It is a drive into the wild.

From Ulaanbaatar, the expedition heads west through the changing landscapes of central and western Mongolia. Asphalt gradually gives way to gravel, dirt tracks, rocky mountain roads, river crossings and true off-road terrain. The farther west you go, the less there is between you and the mountains.

After approximately 3,800 km, the expedition reaches Bayan-Ölgii and Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, where Mongolia's highest mountain region rises above the surrounding landscape. Khüiten Peak, within the Tavan Bogd massif, is traditionally listed at 4,374 m above sea level; a 2025 GNSS measurement reported a revised elevation of 4,351 m.

Here, the road becomes part of the experience: narrow mountain tracks, open valleys, rocky climbs, cold rivers, high-altitude lakes and dramatic cliffs. Depending on conditions and the route, you may hike, photograph wildlife, explore valleys or simply stop the vehicles and watch the landscape change around you.

Western Mongolia also introduces another side of the country. Bayan-Ölgii is home to a strong Kazakh cultural tradition, including eagle hunters and nomadic families. Guests can meet local families, share tea and food, experience traditional hospitality and learn about a culture that is part of Mongolia's extraordinary diversity.

If your expedition coincides with the September/October eagle-festival season, there may also be an opportunity to experience a traditional Golden Eagle Festival. Festival dates vary by event and year, so they should be confirmed when booking.

At the end, the route turns east again, bringing you back across Mongolia and eventually to Ulaanbaatar.
