May's green steppe, July's warm nights, September's golden light — how to pick the right month for your camper van expedition.
Mongolia has exactly one travel season, and it is the best kind: short, bright, and intense. From May to September the country opens up — the passes clear, the herders move to summer pastures, and the steppe turns from brown to a green that almost hurts to look at. The rest of the year belongs to the wind, the snow, and the people who live here.
May and June are for the green. The grass is at its peak, the rivers are full, and the wildflowers turn the valleys into a painter's palette. Days are long and mild. This is the best window for the Central Mongolia loop and the Khuvsgul Lake route — the lake is still quiet, the mosquitoes haven't arrived, and the herds are everywhere.
July and August are the warmest months and the peak of the season. The Gobi is at its most dramatic: the singing dunes are hot underfoot and the nights are soft. Expect more travelers on the classic routes — which is exactly why our small groups and off-grid camps matter. This is also the season for the Naadam festival, if you time it right.
September is the connoisseur's choice. The crowds thin out, the light turns golden, and the Altai gets its first dusting of snow on the peaks. The dunes are quieter, the sky is clearer, and the evenings around the fire have that end-of-summer feeling that photographs can't capture. Our guides will tell you: September is the month they'd book for themselves.
Whenever you come, the rule is the same — small groups, real nomad country, and a van that sleeps two travelers each. Send us your dates and we will tell you honestly what the season will look like.
