The trip
Khuvsgul is where Mongolia starts to feel different.
The open vastness gives way to dense larch forests. Mountains close in around the road. Rivers cut across the tracks. The air gets colder, the roads get rougher, and eventually the sound of the city becomes something you barely remember.
Over 14 days and 13 nights, you will drive your own 4x4 camper from Ulaanbaatar into northern Mongolia, reaching the shores of Khuvsgul Lake before pushing deeper into the taiga wilderness.
Khuvsgul Lake is one of Mongolia's great freshwater treasures. It stretches approximately 136 kilometres through the north of the country and reaches 262 metres at its deepest point. Its waters contain around 70% of Mongolia's freshwater.
But the lake is only the beginning.
Our expedition goes beyond the familiar lakeside stops and into lesser-visited country, including the remote Khoridol Saridag area — a protected mountain landscape rising to around 3,000 metres west of Khuvsgul.
You drive through forest tracks, mud, rocky ground, mountain roads, river crossings and taiga trails. Sometimes the road is obvious. Sometimes it becomes a muddy line between the trees. If the road disappears into the forest, congratulations — you're probably going the right way.
The expedition is built around wild camping. There are no hotels and no ger camps on the route. Your camper becomes your shelter, kitchen base and way into the wilderness.
We travel with a professional lead driver in a separate operation vehicle, expedition guide, mechanic and private chef. Every vehicle carries approximately 120 litres of fuel, with an approximate range of 500 km depending on terrain and conditions. Recovery equipment and Starlink come with us too.
Khuvsgul is also home to some of northern Mongolia's most distinctive cultures. Along the expedition, we meet nomadic families and, when conditions and local arrangements allow, travel toward reindeer-herding communities and experience the world of the Tsaatan/Dukha people.
Horse travel can take you farther into the taiga where the camper cannot.
This is not a cultural performance built for tourists.
It is a chance to meet people who still live with the landscape in a way that most travelers only read about.
Wildlife is part of the experience too. The northern forests and mountains provide habitat for species including moose, deer, reindeer, wolves, brown bears and many forest and mountain birds. Sightings are never guaranteed — the animals were not informed about our itinerary.
And then there is the lake. You can swim in Khuvsgul. But the lake may have other opinions. Summer water temperatures remain cold, with averages around 8°C in July and 13°C in August in available long-term temperature data.
If we run short of drinking water, don't panic. We brought the world's biggest water bottle.
