The trip
The eastern part of Mongolia is where history and wilderness share the same landscape.
This 14-day expedition takes you from Ulaanbaatar eastward through Khentii and Chinggis city, into the Onon-Balj National Park, across Choibalsan and the immense Menen Steppe, and onward to Buir Lake and Khalkhgol before returning west.
The route is a journey through several different chapters of Mongolia.
In Khentii, we travel through landscapes associated with Chinggis Khaan and the origins of the Mongol Empire, including places connected to his birthplace and early life.
At Onon-Balj National Park, the expedition follows the Onon River through forests, open country and sacred landscapes. Here, the wilderness becomes part of the story. We camp beside the river, meet local families and experience the Buryat-influenced way of life found in this part of Mongolia.
Then the landscape opens.
The trees thin out. The roads become tracks. The horizon gets bigger.
We cross the eastern steppe toward Choibalsan and Menen Steppe, one of the defining landscapes of eastern Mongolia. Here, there are few landmarks to tell you where you are. Sometimes there isn't much road either.
Out here, the road is sometimes just the direction you're pointing.
The expedition then reaches Buir Lake and Khalkhgol, where the landscape becomes a living history book.
The Khalkhgol region was the site of the 1939 Battles of Khalkhin Gol, fought between Japanese forces and Soviet-Mongolian forces. We explore battlefield areas, memorials, museums, military remains, fortifications and other historical sites with the help of local historical guides.
But we don't spend the entire expedition inside museums.
You might spend the morning standing among the remains of a battlefield and the afternoon driving across open grassland with nothing but sky around you.
That's the point.
History is here. So is the wilderness.
Around Buir Lake, there is time for swimming, fishing, boating and camping beside the water. Across the steppe, there are opportunities to look for Mongolian gazelle and other wildlife, although no wildlife sighting is ever guaranteed.
The route remains flexible throughout the expedition. If you want to spend more time exploring a historical site, we can do that. If the group wants to keep moving into the open country and spend more time watching wildlife, we can do that too.
The expedition is structured, but it isn't rigid.
You have a route.
You also have room to explore it.
