INTO THE WILD

Our expedition takes you deep into the remote wilderness of Khentii, following the Onon River through landscapes where rivers, forests, mountains and open steppe remain largely untouched. The journey begins in Ulaanbaatar, travelling by road toward Khentii before leaving the paved roads behind. From there, a true off-road expedition takes you deeper into the wilderness and toward our remote riverside camp.

There are no luxury hotels here. There are no crowds.

There is only wilderness, a river, a fly rod in your hand, and the possibility of seeing one of the greatest freshwater fish on Earth. Our camp is set up in tents, allowing us to remain close to the river and move with the landscape rather than build around it. This is Mongolia at its rawest.

THE TAIMEN

The world's largest salmonid. The ultimate freshwater predator. Taimen (Hucho taimen) are unlike almost anything else a fly fisherman can encounter. They can exceed 1.5 metres in length, with exceptional fish potentially weighing tens of kilograms. Their size is only part of what makes them extraordinary. Taimen are long-lived, slow-growing predators that can occupy enormous stretches of river throughout their lives.

Healthy wild populations survive in only a limited number of river systems, making every encounter meaningful. In the Onon River, scientific surveys have documented taimen exceeding 1.2 metres, while experienced fisheries report trophy fish reaching well beyond one metre. The fish you are looking for may be 80 centimetres.

It may be 100.

It may be 120.

Or, if Mongolia gives you the moment every angler dreams about, something much bigger.

That uncertainty is part of the addiction. You never know what is waiting beneath the next bank.

They know the water. They understand taimen behaviour. And, most importantly, they know how to approach these fish.

This gives every fisherman individual attention while allowing our guides to focus on reading the river, finding productive water and helping you make the most of every opportunity. Whether you are an experienced international fly fisherman or casting for your first taimen, our guides adapt the experience to your ability. You don't need to arrive as a taimen expert.
